Open-Meteo
Widget
Open-Meteo Forecast API
Open-Meteo Air Quality / CAMS
NOAA SWPC OVATION
International Meteor Organization
Apple Core Location / CLGeocoder

How data moves
Device location → Open-Meteo
Precise coordinates from permission or a manual place are sent to Open-Meteo over HTTPS with weather, air-quality, and seasonal requests.
Global aurora grid → device
The app downloads NOAA's global OVATION data and finds a nearby grid point on your device. The NOAA request does not include precise location.
Local calculations
Solar position, moon phase, event scores, and display choices are calculated on the device without an additional upload.
Local cache → Widget
The main app shares the minimum display data for the next sky moment with its Widget through an iOS App Group.
See the Privacy Policy for data-handling details.
Core sources and calculations
Open-Meteo Forecast API
Sunrise and sunset, total and layered cloud cover, visibility, humidity, wind, precipitation, temperature, and other weather fields. Weather data is credited under CC BY 4.0.
Open-Meteo Air Quality / CAMS
Aerosol optical depth, dust, PM2.5, PM10, AQI, and ozone for twilight appearance and outdoor air conditions. CAMS composition forecasts are delivered through Open-Meteo and credited under CC BY 4.0.
NOAA SWPC OVATION
A global aurora intensity grid covering roughly the next 30–90 minutes. NOAA data is credited as U.S. government public data; use does not imply NOAA endorsement of SkyNote.
International Meteor Organization
Major shower activity windows, peak dates, and radiant references use factual entries from the IMO 2026 calendar. The app does not republish the PDF layout or text.
Apple Core Location / CLGeocoder
Provides device location and resolves coordinates to a city name and time zone. You can deny access and choose a manual place instead.
SkyNote local models
Combine the inputs above for solar geometry, moon phase, twilight, rainbow, visibility, outdoor windows, and seasonal phenomena. Outputs are heuristic scores or suitability ratings, not calibrated success probabilities.
Refresh and caching
| Data | Typical cache | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weather | 60 minutes | Manual refresh has a cooldown to avoid duplicate requests. |
| Air quality | 120 minutes | Used for twilight appearance and outdoor air conditions. |
| NOAA aurora grid | 15 minutes | Network and background state can delay the source's normal cadence. |
| Seasonal context | 24 hours | Requested only when the selected place matches a maintained phenology coverage area. |
| Widget / Live Activity | Scheduled by iOS | Updates are not a fixed timer and may be affected by system policy. |
Seasonal and phenology references
Cherry blossom, ginkgo, and fall foliage appear only where SkyNote maintains a source and a defined geographic coverage. The following pages establish static presence and local timing baselines. The app does not scrape them at runtime or claim partnership or endorsement.

Limitations and credits
Do not use SkyNote for safety-critical decisions
Local clouds, terrain, line of sight, light pollution, small-scale precipitation, and observed visibility can differ from gridded forecasts. The app is not an aviation, marine, emergency-weather, outdoor-safety, or professional astronomy tool.
- Open-Meteo weather data is credited under CC BY 4.0. API access rights and the underlying data license are separate; access must also follow the provider's current service terms.
- CAMS data is delivered through Open-Meteo, and the page and app retain source attribution.
- Use of NOAA public data does not imply endorsement by NOAA, NWS, or the U.S. government.
- Sources may be delayed, interrupted, or change format. The app degrades its display when data is stale or incomplete but cannot guarantee continuous availability.
